I'm tinkering with an idea of making a PnP RPG setting set in an arctic world. Seven cities, warmed by magic pyres, connected by the "overland", several feet of ice set over the ocean.

I was wondering if anyone has heard of PnP RPG settings in arctic areas. Now, I'm not asking if a system has rules for extreme cold, snow, and ice. Any system can have that. I'm asking specifically for settings.

So, anyone have any examples?

Okay, Wizards of the Coast is playtesting D&D 5e. It's supposed to emphasize "modular design" and allow people to play something that emulates the edition of D&D they grew up with. Rumor has it that grid combat is going to be one of those modular parts that can be ignored.

On one hand, 4e is the D&D I liked the most. I know 4e is the redheaded stepchild of the editions of D&D, but I still want some of the options to come with me us into the new edition, so I decided to list them.

I'm applying to Grad School again. This time, I took care not to make a mistake I made the first time. I sent e-mails asking for Letters of Recommendation before sending the electronic requests. Three of my old professors have said yes.

Now I found out that one of my professors has not kept his word.

I'm kicking myself a little, as I haven't said anything in the month between "he says yes" and today.

But right now, the due dates are (from most wanted to least wanted institution) one month, less than two weeks, and about two weeks.

May have to go back to Grand View and take the General GRE again FUCKDAMMIT.

I found the place.

I can say it's quieter, but I still can't be heard over the music.

And the place is crowded. The crowd is also a little old for me.

That. Was. Terrible.

I wanted to find the quiet place. I didn't want to play Where's Waldo the driving game.

I spent 2+ hours and about 50 miles worth of gas looking for this quiet place I was told about.

And I came back home empty handed. Even my plan "B" fell through. (I didn't think AllPlay would close at 9 on weekdays).

I see a lot of people going to this place, but directions don't show me where this fucking place exists. I'm going to e-mail the woman back on whether this place has any tricks, and try to find it tomorrow in the daytime. (I didn't want to leave before sundown today).

Okay, V/A Child's Play deals with a psychic causing violence at an elementary school. Should I start with a scene of kid violence or go straight to negotiating the bodyguard job?

Okay, I think I know why I'm having problems writing "V/A Child's Play."

I'm trying to start with the kid gloves with my MC's, but I'm having a hard time trying to threaten them. A janitor with a wrench can't do too much when one MC can turn into a cloud at will and the other can shrug off some bullets.

Yet, on the other hand, the heroes don't have status to take on anything larger. I'm trying to figure out how to balance the kid gloves with their relative level.

If we define personhood at conception, does that mean that identical twins are legally the same person?

When I downloaded Zeitgeist: "Hey, a great D&D campaign setting to play with my friends."

After the second time I couldn't start due to lack of interest: "Hey, a great reason to leave Iowa for graduate school."

There's a saying: Adversity doesn't build character; it reveals it.

For example, with the hardships of our current economic clusterfuck situation, these people have revealed themselves as GIGANTIC FUCKING ASSHOLES!

* My last practice math GRE was scored at 650. My goal was at least 600. Now if I can keep that up through two more practice tests and the actual exam on the 15th, I'll be set.

* I finally promoted Zeitgeist to the D&D Encounters people. I've got a date and time (October 15th, after the GRE). Looks like I may get my 4-PC table. Or more.

One of my major rules: If you like someone or you want to get to know someone, it is your responsibility to start the ball rolling. It's your responsibility to start the conversation. It's your responsibility to get the other person's number (or give out your own). At those first steps, it's on you. You may luck out and find someone who's just as interested in you as you are in them, but that shouldn't be your dating strategy.

I had a message exchange with a woman on OKCupid. I wasn't interested at first, but she started the exchange, so I wanted to see if she could convince me differently. She sent messages that would be terse for "winks". It was almost like she was waiting to get me to start the conversation for her.

She said she wanted to get to know me. I asked her what she wanted to know, and she bowed out.

Whenever I'm reading something and I come across a person's name with an initial that substitutes for a one-letter name (and thus, the period isn't necessary, e.g. Harry S Truman), it takes me several minutes to convince myself that no, I don't need to correct them, this is perfectly acceptable, and I need to get over it.

Something big. It was like I was told to remember this day for some reason. Something important to a lot of people.

Sailor Moon's supposed to be re-released-- no, that isn't it.

The third Theatre Illumina-- no, not it either.

Oh, well, I'll probably remember it. And if not, it probably wasn't that important anyway.
